Castles Along the Moselle

There are around 1,100 castles in Rhineland-Palatinate alone, some of which are located along the Moselle. Many of these castles are very well preserved and can even be visited. Below you will find a selection of the beautiful castles along the Moselle that are easy to reach from Koblenz.

Alken
Thurant Castle
One of the oldest castles in the Moselle region can be found in Alken. Partly built on Roman foundations, Thurant Castle is easily recognisable from afar. From the top of the castle, you can enjoy a fantastic view of the Moselle valley and its vineyards. On a tour, you can not only experience the double castle, but also learn about the ancient craft of winemaking.

Wierschem
Eltz Castle
If this sight looks somehow familiar, you are not mistaken. The pearl of the Moselle, Eltz Castle, adorned the reverse side of the 500 mark bill between 1961 and 1995. A stamp of Eltz Castle was also issued at the end of the 1970s. This is hardly surprising, as Eltz Castle is so magically situated in the countryside that you can't help but be amazed.

Cochem
Reichsburg Castle
The Reichsburg castle in Cochem is a real gem, situated high on the rock above Cochem and lovingly restored in the 19th century. Here you can experience all sorts of things from the age of chivalry. Knights' banquets, medieval customs and a very special atmosphere at Christmas time make a visit worthwhile.
